Buckwheat was imported into Europe during the Crusades and introduced to France as early as the 15th century. It was Anne of Brittany that allowed it to be popularized in Brittany. Its culture developed rapidly in the 19th century and then declined during the 20th century. However, in recent years, this culture has been spreading again. It is the "black wheat" of poor Breton soils and enters the traditional food of many parts of Central Europe (Russia, Armenia, Turkey).
